There was an outside chance I was going to be able to go down to San Jose and cover last nights StrikeForce event (Frank Shamrock v. Cung Le headlining) for the Rear Naked Choke but the stars just did not line up properly. By the time we got in touch with the person who could get me the credential, it was too late. Not wanting to spend the PPV money either I just waited for some video to show up on YouTube. Of course – it’s there for now.
No ground game for Shamrock in this fight. Weird. Granted, Le was doing a great job of keeping Shamrock at bay with some straight kicks and keeping the exchanges on the periphery but it looked to me like Frank felt ok trading shots and wasn’t going to press for a takedown. Maybe he felt that he could keep Le looking for / wary of the takedown and use that to land some bombs. It kind of worked, but not so much.
Late in the third Shamrock seemed to wake up and start to take it to Le, but in the waning seconds of the round yet another left kick snapped into Shamrock’s right arm and broke it. Le had been abusing it for the whole fight and the champion could just not take any more. Good job by Le using his kicks to devastating effect but still disappointing to someone like me that wanted to see the fourth round unfold.
