Just finished watching the EliteXC event in Newark, NJ via tape delay.
What a crappy job all around on the biggest friggen stage for MMA.
Rappers?
Cheesy dancers?
O M G
Aside from that crap that made me think of ooohhh, The Running Man…
Gina Carano being allowed to fight after not making weight? Sketchy. I love her but you gotta make weight. That’s what being a pro is about. You want to be on American Gladiators, fine. You want to take a fight on short notice — fine, but you still gotta make weight even though it’s a short training camp. She looked good but the 4lbs makes it sketchy.
The Robby Lawler Scott Smith fight started to redeem things — it was turning into a real classic. Robby (who I have ripped on in the past) has shown himself to be a much more patient fighter than he was in his previous UFC incarnation. I loved his movement too — Scott Smith looked like a statue in comparison. Befittingly, Smith got tagged like a statue in the first round and looked a bit like a deer in the headlights. I thought he was done for but he came out in the second round ready to go. The second round showed a different Smith with him taking it to Lawler. I said, “Self — maybe this is actually going to be a FIGHT Fight.” Then the 3rd round happened and EliteXC started it’s sux0ring again.
Clearly, as made clear by the commentators – Smith had five minutes to get his vision to clear and to recover from the unintentional finger in the right eye from a wayward Lawler right hand block. A minute into it the doctor is there asking him if he can see and he says he can’t asks for the five minutes he’s supposed to have.
At this point – the program is behind schedule btw. Kimbo time is going to be cutting into affiliates time with the human cockfight spectacle. Is that why the doc was there so early to see if he could continue? I mean, if Smith wants his five minutes — give it to him and THEN check him out. Horrible stoppage. You could almost hear the CBS execs calling the shots and stopping things. Hey it was getting a little bloody. Can’t have that, right? Blood plus behind schedule = stoppage? CROOKED.
Lastly, Kimbo…
Mr. Ferguson, I realize you are the poster child for MMA now. Still, that does not mean you are supposed to get resets just because you are you. You were getting set up for a Crucifix and got a reset. You were trapped against the cage and getting creamed and could not perform a simple hip escape to get out of trouble. You rocked Thompson and knocked him stupid but did not put him down. Despite having his bell severely rung, I think he could have hung on, just like he did in prior rounds.
EliteXC — since when is a cut on the EAR a danger to the fighter? Like a real danger? Thompson’s ear already looked like it belonged in Ripley’s or in that bizzaro museum in Philadelphia, if it fell of it wouldn’t change things for him really. I think CBS stopped the fight because of the blood. Again.
How can you sign on for MMA and then get all gun shy when you signed on for?
Shameful. Borderline fix call on my part, but not by some Mob guy — but by Shaw and CBS which makes it even worse. You suck. I hope your fighters all leave you for another organization.
WEC tomorrow night btw. The California Kid! Jens Pulver! I’m totally conflicted as who to root for, but I’m leaning towards Faber despite Pulver’s Militech connection. Also – Mark Munoz is on the card as well fighting at 205. Matt Horwich said this kid was going to be the next big thing in the light heavyweight division so lets see. One things for sure, they’ll be hard pressed to eff things up as badly as EliteXC and CBS did.

I agree on most counts regarding premature stoppages, but Thompson was whacked out. It wasn’t just blood, his equilibrium def. was messed up. As far as the “show”…it seemed like just a few people decided to choreograph a flashy entrance…and that was mostly the earlier fights. The first thing I told Joe though was, “How can anyone new to MMA watch this for the first time and believe it’s going to be real?!” I say leave the rappers home, the sequins too. The dancers are okay. All other sports get away with cheerleaders & stuff, and they’re only around in between to get the crowd going. I am not just saying this because I have a dance background
Overall, I am not so pissed as you that I have a Gary Shaw voo-doo doll or anything. I just think it was embarrassingly obvious that the outcomes of the fight were driven by the fact that there was a network tv audience watching. Or were they watching???? Was it the rappers or Phil Baroni’s sequin robe that drove them to watch re-runs on TV Land?
